BMJ Katz
FROM OUR TUTORS
"We are Jack ‘Mac’ McDougal on Saxophone, Nick Kacal on Double Bass and Ryan Thrupp on drums and we make up the regular tutors for the BMJ Katz. We are all professional jazz musicians, performing regularly both as a trio group and in various other ensembles and collectives.
Black Mountain Jazz approached us with the aims of expanding the youth jazz workshop series. Having all worked with and performed for Black Mountain Jazz, we were excited and enthusiastic to be a part of this new initiative.
The workshops run monthly - usually on a Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.
Workshops are often followed with a performance by the tutors with a featured guest artist. BMJ Katz members are welcome to come to the performances free of charge.
In the workshops we aim to teach Jazz performance and improvisation from a more organic, aural tradition, with plenty of listening and no sheet music involved.
It is a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere with the sole purpose of showing participants the enjoyment and fulfilment that can be had from jazz music, with the aim that they take home the knowledge and confidence they gain from the workshops - hopefully to be useful in their musical journeys."
We welcome all instruments, including voice. Musical ability needs to be roughly equivalent to Grade 3 or higher - although actual grades are not required.
The core age group is 11 to 16 years but we have had some younger and a few older members.
We have a drum kit and a piano. Other instruments need to be brought in by the youngsters participating in the workshops.
BMJ Katz will perform several times each year. Their next performance is at the Melville Centre on Sunday 13th December.

All workshops are from 2pm to 5pm, with comfort breaks.
We charge £72 per term (£18 per workshop).
New members can join at any time.
