Sarah Brown is one of the most prolific and in-demand vocalists in the world. She has recorded with the likes of Pink Floyd, George Michael, Stevie Wonder and Simply Red, as well as touring with Roxy Music, Simple Minds and Duran Duran.
Her album, Sarah Brown Sings Mahalia Jackson, offers a wonderful interpretations of some of the classic tracks of arguably the most famous gospel singer of the last century.
Mahalia Jackson (1911 – 1972) is widely considered as a major influence on many past greats, including Mavis Staple, Little Richard, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Donna Summer and Ray Charles.
In a Radio 4 Woman’s Hour interview, Sarah Brown recalled that at as early as 10 years old she was greatly moved by and tried to sing along to the renderings of Mahalia Jackson.
The album has been widely praised and this performance promises to be a fitting finale to the 2023 wall2wall Jazz Festival.
